I’m Santa John. For more than 30 years, I’ve had the privilege of portraying Santa Claus for families, photographers, businesses and communities across New England. Each Christmas, I step into the role with the same goal: to help people feel the joy, kindness and connection that make this season special.

My real white beard and red velvet Santa wardrobe help create that first moment of wonder. What matters most to me, though, is what happens after Santa arrives: the conversation with a child, the laughter shared by a family, and the memory they carry home.

Why I portray Santa

Meeting Santa can be a big moment for a child. Some have spent weeks thinking about what they want to say. Parents and grandparents may be looking forward to it just as much, knowing that a photograph or a story from that day could become part of their family’s Christmas tradition. I consider it an honor to be invited into those moments.

I believe Santa should listen, be patient, and make people feel welcome. Some children run right up to me; others need time to feel comfortable. Some have a long list of wishes, while others are happiest sitting quietly beside Santa. I try to meet each child where they are and give them a moment that feels like their own.

That human connection is why I’ve continued portraying Santa since 1995. A smile, a thoughtful answer or a few unhurried minutes together can mean far more than I may ever know.

An authentic Santa, down to the details

I care about the details that make a visit feel believable. My genuine white beard and carefully maintained wardrobe of rich red velvet with white fur trim create the classic Santa appearance that children recognize. The colors and textures also photograph beautifully, whether we’re taking a family snapshot or working on a professional holiday portrait.

The appearance opens the door to the experience. My job is to arrive prepared, engage naturally and help everyone enjoy the time we have together.

From home visits to community celebrations

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to join many kinds of Christmas gatherings:

• Private home visits and family parties
• Christmas parades and tree-lighting celebrations
• Children’s holiday brunches at restaurants
• First responder breakfasts and community appreciation events
• Holiday events for local businesses
• Professional Santa photography sessions

A quiet visit in a family’s living room calls for a different pace than a busy community celebration. I enjoy both. Wherever I go, I want the people I meet to feel that Santa is genuinely glad to be there.

Working with photographers

Some of the most treasured Christmas memories live in photographs. I enjoy collaborating with photographers on family portraits, holiday mini-sessions and creative Christmas imagery. I’m comfortable with posed photographs, but I also know that a wonderful image can happen while a child is simply talking, laughing or getting to know Santa.

My real beard, red velvet wardrobe and experience with children give photographers an authentic Santa presence in front of the camera. I pay attention to the photographer’s direction while leaving room for natural moments that families will want to remember.
